An inspection is the only reliable way to confirm the cause, but these are the parts we check most often:
- Blocked drain pump or pump filter
- Faulty door lock or worn door seal
- Worn drum bearings or shock absorbers
- Water inlet valve or pressure switch
- Drive belt, motor or carbon brushes
- Heating element or temperature sensor
- Control board or programme selector
- Kinked, blocked or loose hoses
Limescale from hard water can build up on the heating element and inside the valves, which is a frequent cause of heating and filling problems.

- Top-loading automatic — lid on top, with an agitator or impeller.

Safe checks before you call
A few simple checks can save time:
- Check that the machine is plugged in and that the socket works with another appliance.
- Check that the water tap supplying the machine is fully open.
- For drain problems, check that the drain hose is not kinked or squashed behind the machine.
If water has reached the plug or socket, switch off at the wall and do not touch the machine. Do not open the drain filter while the drum is full of hot water.
Washing machine repair questions
Why will my washing machine not drain?
The usual causes are a blocked pump filter, a kinked drain hose or a failed drain pump. Coins, hair clips and lint often block the filter.
Why does my machine shake so much on the spin?
An uneven load, a machine that is not level, or worn shock absorbers or drum bearings. If it still shakes with a balanced load, it should be inspected.
