Safe checks before you call
A few simple checks can save time:
- Check the socket with another appliance.
- Make sure the door closes fully and nothing is caught in it.
- Remove foil and metal-trimmed dishes, which are a common cause of sparking.
Never remove the microwave's outer cover. The high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even after the plug is pulled. If it sparks or smells of burning, stop it and unplug it.
Microwave repair questions
Why is my microwave running but not heating?
The usual suspects are the magnetron, the high-voltage diode or capacitor, or a door switch. These must be tested by a technician because of the high voltage involved.
Why is my microwave sparking?
Metal inside, food or grease on the walls, or a damaged waveguide cover. Stop using it until the cause is found.
Is it worth repairing a microwave?
