Safe checks before you call
A few simple checks can save time:
- Check whether the circuit breaker for the heater has tripped.
- Check that the heater's wall switch is on.
- Check that the cold water supply valve to the heater is open.
If water is leaking near the electrical connection, switch the heater off at the breaker. Never block or cap a dripping relief valve; it is a safety device. If you smell gas near a gas heater, turn off the gas supply if it is safe to do so, ventilate the area and leave.
Water heater repair questions
Why is there no hot water?
Common causes are a failed heating element, a faulty thermostat, a tripped safety cut-out or, on gas heaters, a pilot or burner fault.
Why does my water heater trip the breaker?
A shorted element, damaged wiring or water reaching the electrical parts. Switch it off and do not keep resetting the breaker; it needs inspecting.
Why is the relief valve dripping?
Excess pressure or temperature in the tank, or a faulty valve. Do not block it; have the heater checked.
